 Kai O. Haaskivi
Director of Coaching

  • USSF A License
  • European Professional Playing Career: GrIFK, Finland (1974), HJK, Finland (1975-76), FC Kiffen, Finland (1977)
  • Member of the Finnish National Team (1977-84), Kai played in the qualifying matches for the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cups and for the 1980 European Championships. Kai scored goals against England’s Ray Clemence, Italy’s World Cup legend Dino Zoff.
  • North American Professional Playing Career: Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League (NASL) (1978-79), Houston Hurricane (1979-80), Edmonton Drillers (1980-82). Led Edmonton Drillers with 32 points (15 + 17) in six play-off games to the 1981 NASL indoor title, while also leading four different Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) franchises, Houston Summit (1979), Baltimore Blast (1989), Cleveland Force(1991), Cleveland Crunch (1993) to championship-game appearances. Member of the MISL’s 10th Anniversary Team, an eight-time indoor All-Star, MVP of the 1980-81 NASL Indoor regular season and the finals and the MVP of the 1987 MISL All-Star Game. Kai retired being ranked 3rd on the MISL’s all-time scoring list.
  • Coaching Career: Head Coach of the Cleveland Crunch (1991-92) of the MISL; Director of the IMG Soccer Academy (1995-99) where he was responsible for the development and implementation of the year round short and long term curriculum including professional, amateur and youth team training camps, coaching schools and symposiums; Assistant Coach of the U.S. Under-17 Boys National Team (1997 99), Teams included, Taylor Twellman, Landon Donavan and DeMarcus Beasley; Head Coach of Bradenton Academics (1998-99) of the Premier Development League (PDL); Head Coach and General Manager of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2001-03), Division 1 of the United Soccer League (USL), directing the team to the quarterfinals of the Division 1 play-offs and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup; Head Women’s and Men’s soccer Coach of Myers University (2005-07);   Region III boys ODP staff coach (2009-11);  Staff Coach for the Ohio North (1992-95) boys and girls Olympic Development Program (ODP);
  • Head Scout for the U.S. Soccer Federation’s Project 2010.
  • Licenses: National coaching certification with A, B, C and National Youth licenses and a member of the National Instructional Staff for the US Soccer.
  • Honors: # 12 retired by the Cleveland Crunch in honor of the “Flying Finn,” Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame – Class of 2007.
